Days of the Wildman

Actual Journal Entry:
“I Went to Sheep Hills in the afternoon. Its getting good! I had a mattress on a landing & six people holding a blanket. I tried BACKFLIPS! I pulled one on my 5th try. YES! Then a lot of the P.O.W.s & I went street riding at the H.B. high school. Then we rode back to the P.O.W. house. There were some new ramps in the backyard. It’s really good now. A lot of people are staying there. We had a big ramp session. There was supposed to be a party at night, but nobody really came.”

Looking Back Now:
The year 1993 was WAY before anyone had ever jumped into a foam pit. When I learned flips, I had never actually seen anyone do one in person. I had seen the movie Rad & photos of Hoffman doing them, but I had never really seen how they were to be done. So I took a blanket (safety net) out to the trails. I had Pete Dylewski, Alan Foster, & a few others hold onto the corners of the blanket. I told them that if I was coming down on my head to hold tight. But if it looked like I was going to land on my wheels to let go of it. I was well stoke that I pulled it on my 5th try.

And that was 14 years ago! Crazy. The P.O.W. house was always full of dirty BMXers. It wasnt uncommon to have 15 -20 people riding the backyard ramps at any given time. We always had fun there, but the parties were never that great. There would always be plenty of BMX dudes there. But most girls were scared of the dirty couches, the stained carpets, the gross bathrooms, the holes in the walls, being outnumbered 5-to-1 by guys, etc.

Was that a shady way to learn flips or what!? Look close and you’ll see Pete Dylewski, Alan Foster, and Hippy Sean holding the blanket.

That’s a gnar way to learn to flip for sure. If I learned that way I would be dead!
