So the other day I went on the “Wolf Pack Hustle” ride through the streets of Hollywood & LA. And man it was fun! What’s the Wolf Pack Hustle you ask? Well it’s a bunch of guys (anywhere from 15 to 50 show up on the ride) on road bikes, fixed gear bikes, & single speeds. Every Monday night at 10pm, everyone meets up at Tang’s donuts on Sunset Blvd. Once everyone posse’s up, then The first stop is announced. “We’re riding to the 7-11 on the corner of Hollywood Blvd & LaCienega!” And then like bats out of hell, the whole group takes off at a pretty mad pace towards the first stop. Twenty minutes later after the group arrives & gets refreshments, the next stop is announced. “Now we’re going to LAX to the International Terminal!” And off the group goes again. And again, and again. “Next stop the LA Coliseum!” “Next stop the Staples Center!” And on and on for over 3hrs covering about 45 miles in total.
Rich Bartlett (80′s & early 90′s BMX pro racer & dirt jumper) actually told me about the ride. I was a little skeptical at first, but he told me I’d enjoy it, so I figured “What the heck!? And I’m glad I went.
This was my first group road ride EVER. But it wasn’t a bunch of dorky road riders. All the dudes were cool. And because each segment was basically a sprint, I was able to hang. And did I mention how fun it was!? The bike I rode was my PK Ripper 700c single speed. I’m definitely not into riding normal road bikes. And fixed gear bikes aren’t for me. So the PK Ripper set up as a single speed worked just fine for me. And the guys got a kick out some of my wheelies at 25+MPH. Ha ha.
Rumor has it that Stu Thomsen is gonna show up on a ride soon. And Javier Colombo & Robbie Miranda want to hit one up as well. I can’t wait to go on one of the rides with more BMX heads.
If you think you can hang, meet up with the crew on any Monday night: wolfpackhustle.com/
And don’t worry. You don’t have to wear any spandex. Ha ha. But I’d suggest a lite & a helmet. And keep in mind that the ride doesn’t finish ’till nearly 2am. So bring your A-game.
